Erosion

Erosion is a natural process that occurs over time.  HOWEVER, human activities or disturbances along shorelines and watershed greatly accelerate natural erosion processes.  Erosion, also called sedimentation, is by volume the greatest water pollutant in the United States.

Consequences of Erosion:

1. Excessive erosion is known to cause thermal pollution, which diminished the amount of desirable fish species.

2. Accelerated erosion can also increase the release of nutrients that cause an increase of weed growth.

3. Decreases the availability of oxygen that adversely affects gill function and egg production of fish.

4. Diminished underwater habitats, thus destroying spawning areas.

5. Decreases light penetration, which decreases fish productivity.

Typical Causes of Erosion

· Material Removal at Base

· Groundwater Changes

· Top of Slope Changes

· Vegetation Changes
