Environmental Compliance for Public BuildingsMany municipal and county governments utilize our services to assess environmental conditions in public buildings, and to assist in achieving (and documenting) compliance with environmental regulations. In general, public facilities experience high usage, and are held to a higher standard then those in the private sector. Schools are subject to particularly stringent regulations; the Minnesota Department of Public Health requires that all sources of drinking water in schools be tested to confirm they do not exceed health standards for lead and copper. For many schools we also test for radon gas, and develop a compliance manual and mitigation plan for locations where problems are identified. Depending on age and type of construction, many buildings may also warrant investigation for asbestos, mold, moisture, carbon monoxide, or a variety of other potential causes of health problems. Our laboratory can evaluate each of these contaminants in a cost efficient, timely, and accurate manner. Our team includes an industrial physician and a nurse practitioner in order to develop health surveys which can isolate locations and causes of health complaints. For example, in one recent instance we ultimately identified that most health complaints were attributable to an unusually high incidence of smoking. Smoker cessation training and correction of practices which can lead to repetitive motion disorders greatly reduced employee complaints. Ultimately any public monitoring program must be tailored to the unique needs and concerns of the client. Please call AWRL to arrange a meeting to discuss your needs, concerns, and goals, and together we can develop a practical and affordable program which best serves your community. |
